Do all of your backups fail because your website has a lot of files?

Backups are essential for securing data. But, basic backup tools aren’t built to handle large websites with a high volume of files.

Harald Polz, a retired engineer turned avid traveler, turned to Duplicator Pro to handle his large-scale backups. And you can too!

Meet Harald Polz

Let me introduce you to Harald Polz: a retired engineer.

Out of love for exploration, he runs a travel website called LL555. It’s an ever-growing repository of thousands of images from his many adventures with his wife.

LL555 is a visual diary of memories, displayed beautifully for those who have access. But, it’s restricted to registered users due to bandwidth constraints.

This isn’t just a travel blog, it’s a monumental travel archive, which brings along its own unique set of challenges.

One question is: how do you back up that much data?

The Challenge of Large Backups

Harald Polz faced a challenge in managing his personal travel website. Hosted on his private NAS, the site housed a staggering amount of data – over 400GB and 230,000 files, to be exact.

And with each travel venture, the size of his site steadily expanded.

Naturally, this colossal amount of data made it difficult to back up his site.

With a NAS, he could have duplicated the files and database. This could’ve been stored as a backup, but Harald also had a local testing site.

Harald was looking for a tool powerful enough to back up his website and transfer it to the local IP address on his computer. However, many backup plugins weren’t up for the job.

To my surprise, highly recommended backup plug-ins failed. They just choked on my WordPress site leaving me high and dry after running for days, requiring me to abort the backup.

Overcoming Backup Obstacles with Duplicator

Harald stumbled upon Duplicator Pro as a solution. Although his website had more than 400GB of data and 230,000 files, Duplicator never faltered or choked halfway through a backup.

The plugin could also gracefully manage the transition from the public IP address of Harald’s NAS to the local IP of his computer, unlike other backup plugins.

What made the difference was Duplicator’s custom DupArchive. This file format is made specifically for larger sites, just like Harald’s.

Once Harald backs up his travel website, he migrates his files to his testing site. To do this, he uploads the backup to the /wp-content/backups-dup-pro/imports folder using an FTP client.

Doing this manually may seem like a daunting task, but Harald took it in stride. It’s a simple process that just involves some endurance, as uploading a 400GB backup file can take several hours.

As Harald pointed out, “patience is required.”

Now, Harald can enjoy his and his wife’s travel experiences over and over again! He won’t have to worry about unexpected issues deleting these memories forever.

Results

With Duplicator, Harald was able to:

  • Back up over 230,000 files
  • Create backups over 400GB
  • Migrate large backups to a local staging site
  • Continue growing his media website without worrying about large backup files

Summary

Duplicator addresses a critical challenge that Harald faced with other backup plugins: handling large backups without faltering halfway.

Harald’s case was extraordinary because of the huge volume of files that needed to be backed up. With Duplicator, backups became much easier.

I have a backup app that works.
